Today, October 9, 2026, David Newbould releases “All I’ve Got In Front Of Me Is The Past.” Following “Dead On The Ground,” it is the second single from his forthcoming album Average Fidelity Vol. II, due in 2027. Later this month, the Nashville-based songwriter returns to Europe for thirteen shows across six countries.
The title holds a bitter paradox: what happens when everything ahead of you seems shaped by what you have left behind? The song’s narrator reflects on years spent chasing a dream, the sacrifices made along the way, and the difficulty of letting go after giving something everything you have.
Newbould wrote the song several years ago, imagining a country character worn down by life and ambition. His inspiration fell somewhere between Waylon Jennings “if he’d given up” and Jeff Bridges’ character in Crazy Heart. Feelings from his own life found their way into the writing, too.
The song then sat on the shelf for years. After building his home studio, Newbould returned to it. His love of old country drums and bass suggested an arrangement he could record himself, and he went on to perform every instrument and vocal part, as well as producing and mixing the track. Alex McCullough at True East Mastering handled the mastering.
“Then I remembered how much I liked the song!” Newbould recalls. “Once I had it recorded I wondered why I’d let it sit around for so long.”
It now opens Average Fidelity Vol. II, the next instalment in his series of self-produced home recordings. Bringing together older songs and new writing, the album makes room for Americana, folk, honky-tonk and rock.
European tour 2026
Beginning on October 30, Newbould embarks on his fifth European tour in just over three years. Following appearances at Static Roots Festival, Roots In The Park and Gevarenwinklefest, he returns to clubs and listening rooms across the continent.
