Swedish artist Magda Novels today presents a new stripped-back live performance of ‘House Of Mirrors’. Filmmaker Kenneth Ly captured the entire acoustic performance in one continuous take. The video also offers a first glimpse of what audiences can expect from Magda’s solo shows in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium this November.
‘House Of Mirrors’ was originally released as the first single from Magda’s debut album, Vol. 1 Shadow Work. For this new version, the layers of the original studio production have been stripped away. What remains is the heart of the song: Magda’s voice, musicianship, and the direct emotional power of her songwriting.
Dancer Suvi-Sisko Hedlund also plays an essential role in the performance. Dance forms a central metaphor within the lyrics of ‘House Of Mirrors’, while for Magda herself it represents something far outside her natural comfort zone. After seeing Suvi-Sisko interpret the song through movement for the first time, Magda knew that they would eventually have to bring the music and choreography together in a more intimate setting.
Filmmaker Kenneth Ly recorded the complete live performance without a single cut. To follow the interaction between Magda and Suvi-Sisko, he had to move through the space with them, becoming almost another participant in the choreography behind the camera.
The result is more than an alternative interpretation of an existing song. The video shows how Magda Novels can hold the listener without the layers of a full studio production. It captures the intimacy, vulnerability and quiet intensity that audiences can expect from her upcoming solo concerts.
